It must be too obvious how you can save power during hot weather by using less electricity in your home. But where is the fun in that?

The main goal of saving energy is to save money, but it can also help you reduce your carbon footprint. Here are five tips to help you save money while beating the heat (without compromising too much).

Put some indoor plants

Planting trees or placing potted plants in your house or over your outdoor air conditioning can make your cooling systems up to 10% more efficient.

The more water a plant can store, the more water it will release into the air, which helps cool the air. It also releases oxygen at night and gets rid of toxins in the air.

Use electricity at non-peak hours.

When it comes to saving money on your energy bills, the time of day you use electricity is also quite important. Energy businesses charge more during “peak” hours, which are the times of day when demand is highest. You can help reduce grid load and reduce your monthly energy bill by limiting your energy use to “off peak” hours, such as early morning or late at night.

Give your air conditioner a tune-up

Getting the most out of your cooling systems is one of the most important ways to save money on energy and stay cool. Clearing a clogged AC unit filter alone will save 5 to 15% on energy use and can help keep the unit in proper working condition for longer, saving you money on expensive replacements in the future.

Change the temperature

When it’s really hot in the summer, adjusting the thermostat feels like pressing the down arrow on the control panel as fast as you can. Unfortunately, this is also the best way to make your energy bill as high as possible. During the summer, try to keep your thermostat just cool enough to keep you comfortable, and then turn it up a degree. One study found that for every degree above 750F that a thermostat is set, 10–15% less energy is used.

Unplug devices even when unused

When you do leave the house, unplugging devices from their outlets or using smart power strips can help you save money on energy costs by getting rid of “phantom” or “standby” electricity that appliances, chargers, and standard power strips use even when they are not in use.

These are just a few of the many ways you can conserve energy and on your power bills. When there is a will, there is indeed a way.
