Choose The Right Light For Your Home

If you want to understand more about your lighting options and how to choose the perfect lighting for each space in your home, you’ve come to the right place. Let’s get started.

There are three types of lighting.

  1.   Ambient Lighting
  2.   Task Lighting
  3.   Accent Lighting

Usually, every room has at least two different forms of lighting, but there are times when a room has all three.

Ambient Lighting

Most of the time, ambient lighting is the main source of light in a room. They can be anything from lights on the ceiling to lights on the walls.

Normally, your contractor will decide how much ambient lighting a room needs. He or she will probably measure the lighting in “foot-candles,” which is how bright a light is one foot away from its “home.”

Task Lighting

Task lighting gives you the light you need when reading a book or putting on makeup in front of a mirror. These lights are never used to light up a whole room. They are only used to light up a small part of a room.

Different-sized and shaped task lights are available. They can be attached to a wall, placed on a desk, or reflected in a mirror. Some of them can even turn or swivel so that you can put them wherever you want and at whatever angle you want.

Accent Lighting

Accent lighting is the lighting that adds the most style to a room. Most of the time, these lights are used to highlight something you like in the house, like a painting, fireplace, or bookshelf. In general, these lights draw attention to something so that everyone can see it.  Accent lights include chandeliers, wall sconces, and lamps.

Every room needs a different way of lighting. Almost every house has an entrance, a living room, a dining room, a kitchen, a bedroom, and a bathroom. Let’s look at what each room needs for light.

Entrance

You should make your entryway look warm and friendly. You could hang a chandelier in the middle of the ceiling, for example (this works well with tall ceilings).

It’s okay if your ceiling isn’t very high. Try to find a light fixture that gives a mellow vibe.

Living Room

The living room is a place to hang out and have fun. So, you’ll want to have access to bright light in case you need it, but you won’t want to use the bright light all the time. Here, you can put floor lamps, table lamps, and sconces.

Dimmers are also great for living rooms because you can turn on a bright light and then turn it down to fit the mood.

Dining Room

You need a bright enough light in the dining room so you can chat and eat at the table without straining your eyes.

Put a chandelier right in the middle of the dining room table instead. You can also hang a couple of pendant lights over the dining room table.

Kitchen

It can be tough to light the kitchen because different parts of the room need different lighting. For example, you should put bright lighting over the kitchen island or sink and dimmer lighting in areas that don’t get used as much.

If you have a wide sink, an open bar, or a beautiful kitchen counter, pendant lights are the best choice, both functionally and aesthetically.

Bedroom

The only thing the bedroom needs is a warm light. You should plan the room around task lighting, so you can read while you’re relaxing or watching TV with a lamp on your bedside table.

A dimmer switch works well in the living room, but it also works well in the bedroom. If you choose a dimmer switch, you can have bright light when you need it, like when you’re cleaning.

Bathroom

It’s important to have light in the bedroom. You should put sconces or bright LED lights above the mirrors in the bathroom because these are important places to draw attention.

Protip: You’ll get the most use out of these lights if you put them near face height.

These are just friendly pieces of advice for when you decide to renovate your home. If you’re thinking about building from scratch, the better.
